Keeping the Roots Stronger
Once there were two neighbours. One was a retired teacher. The other loved new gadgets and fancy tools. Both planted gardens side by side.
The teacher gave his plants only a little water. He let them stretch and search for more. The other neighbour watered his plants every day and watched them closely. Soon his plants looked taller, greener, and fuller.
Then one stormy night, hard rain and wind swept through the town.
In the morning, the gadget-loving neighbour stared in shock. His plants had fallen. Their roots had come out of the soft ground. But the teacher’s plants still stood tall and firm.
“How?” he asked. “I gave my plants more water and more care. Why did yours survive?”
The teacher smiled. “You made life too easy. Your plants never had to dig deep. I gave mine just enough water, so their roots searched farther down. Deep roots made them strong.”
The neighbour looked at the broken stems and finally understood.
Moral
If everything is given too easily, we may not learn to work hard. A little challenge can make our roots—and our character—stronger.
